12th Avenue- Giving Us What They Want

Posted on May 11, 2011

If you are searching for a straight-forward rock sound, then Cape Town rockers 12th Avenue have got what you need. This is a band that truly believes that Rock & Roll can save the world and after listening to their fourth release, aptly titled 12th Avenue, many a doubter at the start will come out on the other side a believer.

Initially, I was taken aback by what I heard. It wasn’t what I was expecting. Some may call it less polished. Some may call it raw. Po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to. I call it honest.

The hardworking quartet has reportedly stated that they wanted to take a different approach to the record in an effort to harness the power of their live performances and translate it to a studio recording. I think they have achieved what they set out to do. The songs on 12th Avenue represent a great mixed bag of sounds that you want to hear at a live show – some brutal honesty, a bit of fun and fast paced rock.

This is still the musically tight and vocally powerful band I have come to love; however, there was something…different. It took a few listens, but it finally came to me what made this record stand out from the others – that exciting undercurrent that runs throughout. I am not downplaying any of their previous work when I say this, but it sounds like they are not necessarily recording what they think people want to hear. They are recording the music they love to play.
